Iron Man to be imprisoned in 2027: Marvel prepares two sagas leading to issue #700

The consequences of Avengers: Armageddon will radically change Tony Stark's position in the Marvel universe. During San Diego Comic-Con 2026, the publisher announced that Iron Man will be locked up in the Vault, the maximum-security prison for criminals with powers or particularly dangerous technologies.

The story will begin in the United States on December 2nd with Iron Man #12, the first chapter of The Incarcerated Iron Man, written by Joshua Williamson and drawn by Carmen Carnero. The issue numbers and dates indicated refer to the American editions; any Italian publication will follow a different schedule.

According to Williamson, the incarceration represents the culmination of a storyline built since the beginning of his run. Tony has now accepted being considered one of the most dangerous individuals in the Marvel universe and may even voluntarily choose to enter the Vault. However, it has not been clarified what action taken during Armageddon will lead him behind bars.

The situation will be complicated by the new prison warden, Moonstone, a long-time enemy of the Avengers and a skilled manipulator. Stark will also be surrounded by some of his worst adversaries, while the uncontrolled spread of his technologies will have contributed to transforming him, in the eyes of public opinion, into a potential global threat.

Starting December 16th, War Machines will launch in parallel, with art by Gleb Melnikov. In Tony's absence, James Rhodes will lead a team composed of multiple armored fighters, including Melinda May from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. The chapters dedicated to Stark's imprisonment will occupy the even-numbered issues of the American series, while those of the War Machines will be published in the odd-numbered issues.

To support this dual structure, Iron Man will temporarily switch to two monthly releases, approaching the seven hundredth issue calculated according to the character's overall historical numbering. Marvel accompanied the announcement with the slogan "The Future Is Iron", without clarifying whether the reference concerns Tony's return, the rise of the War Machines, or a broader transformation of his technological legacy.

The initiative will coincide with the cinematic release of Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for December 2026 with Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Doctor Doom. At the moment, however, there are no confirmations of his return as Tony Stark, nor official narrative connections between the film and the two comic book sagas.
