The Xbox gaming world is still reeling from the wave of layoffs initiated by Asha Sharma. Among the most affected software houses is Id Software, which, according to some reports, may have lost as many as 136 out of 185 employees. The American studio recently signed Doom: The Dark Ages Revelations and is not only involved in creating the games themselves but also the technology behind them, developing the Id Tech engine.

Romero and Carmack's Words

The severe blow dealt to the studio certainly did not go unnoticed and was commented on by John Carmack and John Romero, legendary founders of Id Software, although they left the studio some time ago (in 2013 and 1996, respectively). Carmack is saddened by the events and wonders if something different could have been done, while acknowledging that competition in the sector is brutal. The American game designer reproaches himself for having uttered an ill-fated "Microsoft will probably be a good steward of the brand" years ago.

Romero's message is along the same lines, expressing regret for the laid-off individuals. The creator of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake praises the work of the developers, particularly that done on the latest titles produced, which in his view shows great care. Romero adds a note on digital preservation, emphasizing the importance of not losing what Id Software has created. For his part, he states that he has preserved everything developed from the beginning until his departure in 1996.

I’m so sorry for everyone at id Software affected by these layoffs. I know what it feels like to leave id while id goes on. It’s a strange and painful thing to step away from a place that holds so much of your work, friendships and history. 1/5
