Geoffrey Rush Open to Barbossa's Return in Pirates of the Caribbean

Geoffrey Rush does not rule out a new journey to the Caribbean, but to step back into the shoes of Hector Barbossa, a story capable of justifying it would be needed. The actor spoke about the possibility of returning to the saga, but hinted that he is not interested in a simple nostalgia operation.

The point is the character's fate. In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Barbossa sacrifices himself to save his daughter Carina and stop Captain Salazar. A return without solid narrative motivation would therefore risk emptying that conclusion of meaning.

A resurrection is not enough

Rush explained that he considers enough time to have passed since his last appearance, but he would not want Barbossa to be brought back to the scene too easily or just to reintroduce a familiar face. After all, the saga offers numerous precedents for circumventing death, but this time the problem would primarily be narrative. The character has had a long journey over 5 films, evolving from the antagonist of the first film to a central figure in the series.

The statements come as Jerry Bruckheimer continues to talk about the possibility of re-involving Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow. At the moment, however, Disney has not officially announced either Depp's or Rush's return. So for Barbossa, the door is not closed, but reopening it will require a story worthy of his epic sacrifice.
