G.I. Joe - The Crazy Idea Paramount Scrapped for the Reboot
The Studio is exploring multiple creative directions to relaunch the famous military team born from Hasbro toys

Hollywood is full of projects that are born with great ambitions and then disappear before even reaching the set. This is what happened to one of the most recent attempts to relaunch G.I. Joe in cinemas. In recent weeks, new details have emerged about an intriguing version of the film that Paramount Pictures decided to abandon during development.
The Studio was evaluating multiple creative directions to bring the famous military team born from Hasbro toys back to the big screen. Among the proposals in the works was one by Max Landis, a screenwriter known for Chronicle. The project was discarded due to what are described as “creative differences,” a rather common phrase in the industry when the Studio and authors do not share the same vision.
What if G.I. Joe became the resistance?

Landis's idea would have nevertheless taken the saga into decidedly uncharted territory. The story imagined a world where Cobra had already conquered the planet. In this scenario, the G.I. Joe would not have been recognized heroes but almost legendary figures, surrounded by doubts and conspiracy theories about their real existence. The few survivors would have operated in the shadows, organizing a clandestine resistance against the regime led by Cobra Commander. A premise that would have transformed the classic conflict between the two factions into a darker narrative, closer to a global guerrilla story.
For now, the cinematic future of the franchise remains uncertain. Paramount is evaluating other screenplays, including one developed by Danny McBride, in an attempt to find the right formula after mixed box office results in recent years.
