Sometimes Hollywood seems programmed to turn every success into a saga, especially when it comes to original films aiming to win over audiences. Free Guy, an SF comedy starring Ryan Reynolds, fit precisely into this category: released in the delicate year of 2021, it became the most-watched original film of the year and a small pop phenomenon. Everything suggested that Free Guy 2 was only a matter of time. But it won't happen.

The revelation comes directly from Shawn Levy, the film's director and long-time Reynolds collaborator. In a recent interview, Levy explained that an unexpected phenomenon caused the second part to derail: Barbie. The global success of Greta Gerwig's film — a billion at the box office, Oscar nominations, and a huge cultural impact — overshadowed many projects with a similar concept.

Levy recounts that the narrative idea on which Free Guy 2 was being developed ended up being too close to the emotional journey of Barbie's protagonist: a naive character who discovers a real world much more complicated than her perfect universe. A parallel that, after the explosion of the pink phenomenon, would have seemed like an unintentional copy.

And so the decision was made: better to leave Free Guy as a standalone film. Levy even argues that the success of the original is already a small miracle, and not all stories need a second life. A rare choice in Hollywood, but perhaps for that very reason more sincere.
