Farewell to John Blanche, the artist who defined Warhammer
The grimdark aesthetic that influenced generations of authors and players

The world of Warhammer mourns John Blanche. The British artist who helped define the aesthetic of Warhammer 40,000 has passed away after several years marked by health problems.
Having made history at Games Workshop thanks to his illustrations, Blanche retired from activity in 2023 after a career spanning decades.
The legacy that inspired games and creators

John Blanche's name is linked to many of the images that helped build the visual identity of Warhammer 40,000. His works shaped a dark and decadent future, which over the years became one of the setting's distinguishing features.
Among his most celebrated works is the depiction of the Emperor of Mankind on the Golden Throne, still considered today one of the iconic images of the Warhammer universe.

The news comes just over a year after the release of the documentary The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, made by Daniel Lowman and actor Jon Heder, which chronicled the artist's influence and his contribution to the birth of the grimdark aesthetic.
From illustrated manuals to video games set in the 41st millennium, Blanche's mark continues to be an integral part of the identity of Warhammer 40,000.
