EA Brings 25 Classics to PC, Including Road Rash and Wing Commander

Electronic Arts announces the PC release of 25 classic video games, now available on the EA App, Steam, and GOG digital stores. The long list (which we report in full below) includes iconic names from the '90s such as Road Rash, Theme Hospital, plus various titles belonging to the Wing Commander and Ultima franchises. The games preserve their original look while offering quality-of-life improvements for modern systems.

How EA Revived Its Classics

Electronic Arts' initiative began after one of its producers, Jim Vessella, discovered an archive with almost 20,000 physical media at EA's headquarters in 2022. These media contained the original footage of Road Rash and the various Wing Commander titles. Extensive work on digitizing the videos (thousands of videos) and frame-by-frame restoration allowed these resources to be recovered.

Recovering the footage was only the first step. To bring the various Wing Commander games back to life, Vessella turned to the community and found modders who had already created specific tools to improve the games and insert videos into them. Thanks to collaboration with these modders and further work that took years, the endeavor was completed. You can find all the details about the initiative in this article on the EA website.

The Wing Commander games are thus re-released in a new format, which includes much higher quality footage than in the past, but not only that, because we also find extra content and various improvements such as support for modern control systems and 60 fps. Road Rash received similar treatment, with an internal restoration by EA that also involved renewing licenses for the music.
