Martin Scorsese changes register and approaches darker territories with What Happens at Night, a new project currently in production in Europe, specifically in the Czech Republic. The first images released show Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence immersed in a snowy landscape, anticipating a cold and unsettling atmosphere.

The film is inspired by Peter Cameron's novel and tells the story of an American couple who travel to a remote European location to adopt a child. Their stay takes place in a large, almost deserted hotel, populated by enigmatic figures who seem to hide more than they show. From that moment, reality begins to crack, dragging the protagonists into an increasingly ambiguous spiral.

Darker and More Ambiguous Than Shutter Island

Initial indications speak of a work suspended between mystery and dreamlike suggestions, with echoes of visual and narrative experiences reminiscent of The Shining and the atmospheres of Twin Peaks. Not a traditional horror, then, but a psychological tale where identity and perception progressively blur.

The cast also includes prominent names such as Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, and Jared Harris, while the screenplay is penned by Patrick Marber. Apple Studios and Studiocanal are collaborating on the production.

For Scorsese, this is his seventh collaboration with DiCaprio, confirming their consolidated artistic partnership. This project could mark an interesting turning point in his filmography, with evidently darker and more undefined tones than what was already seen in Shutter Island in 2010.
