Crimson Desert: An Overview of Combat and Progression
A deeper dive into the Korean action/RPG continues

Pearl Abyss returns to talk about its Crimson Desert, the open-world action/RPG with a dark fantasy setting that spans from the Middle Ages to robotics. This title will be released on March 19, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox PC). After sharing a first in-depth look at the protagonist Kliff and the game world, it's time for a second special, which details the combat and progression systems.
Crimson Desert's Combat
The game's combat system is geared towards variety: Kliff will be able to wield multiple types of weapons, from swords to spears, axes to claymores, as well as several tools for ranged attacks. Each weapon has its strengths and is suited to a specific combat style. Kliff will be able to switch between different weapons in real-time, but also resort to unarmed attacks, kicks, and grabs, thus creating innumerable combos.

Crimson Desert's Progression
In trailers, we usually see Kliff at the peak of his potential, but the game obviously won't start that way: initially, our character will have a very limited set of moves and abilities, which can be expanded along the way. It goes without saying that the player can decide to delve into specific skill trees, to access further combat possibilities.
The methods of acquiring abilities are quite interesting: a good portion will be absorbed from Artifacts, which are the corrupted fragments that have fallen onto the continent from the Abyss. Other abilities will only be available after observing them in the world (for example, when performed by an enemy), while still others will be unlocked after defeating bosses. Speaking of the latter, the trailer has greatly raised expectations, suggesting that there will be several epic clashes.
