Blade Runner 2099 and the Homage to Ridley Scott's Film
The condition of one of the protagonists recalls that of the replicant Roy Batty
The new poster for Blade Runner 2099 reprises the visual identity of the film directed by Ridley Scott in 1982, recalling the aesthetic that made the sci-fi saga famous. The Prime Video series is set fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049 and will debut on the platform on November 25, 2026.
The plot introduces two protagonists with very different identities. Michelle Yeoh plays Olwen, a replicant nearing the end of her life cycle, while Hunter Schafer takes on the role of Cora, a human who hides by assuming the identity of a replicant.
The Past and Future Between Life and Death
Their encounter offers a new perspective on the central themes of the saga, which should range from the boundary between humans and artificial creatures to the fear of death. Olwen's condition recalls that of Roy Batty, the replicant played by a brilliant Rutger Hauer in the original film, while Cora's secret reverses one of the most recurring dynamics of the narrative universe.
The production involves Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free, and Amazon Studios. Silka Luisa, already the author of Shining Girls, serves as showrunner, while Jonathan van Tulleken, director of Shōgun, will direct the first two episodes. The graphic reference to the 1982 film establishes a link with the origins of the saga. It remains to be seen whether the new series will be able to develop its own narrative identity and, above all, recreate the atmosphere of the two previous works.
