The possible return of Basic Instinct is already stirring both excitement and confusion. In recent hours, there was talk of Emerald Fennell (Wuthering Heights, 2026) leading the project, but the news was quickly denied: no involvement, at least for now.

The hypothesis was put forward by Joe Eszterhas himself, author of the screenplay for the original film directed by Paul Verhoeven, now once again working on the script for the reboot produced by Amazon MGM Studios. According to reports, the project aims for an unusual blend: copycat serial killers and almost supernatural suggestions.

Between Improbable Returns and New Narrative Directions

While the film is taking shape, it seems unlikely we'll see Sharon Stone reprise her role as Catherine Tramell. The actress has already expressed strong doubts about the project, distancing herself from Eszterhas with rather harsh statements.

The character, made iconic in the '90s thriller alongside Michael Douglas, remains the narrative core: an ambiguous and manipulative figure that will be difficult to replicate without a decisive change in perspective.

After the commercial flop of the much-maligned Basic Instinct 2, this new attempt at a relaunch presents itself as a more delicate gamble than expected. Between provocation, eroticism, and updating of themes, the risk is high: reinventing a classic without betraying its identity. Bets are open on who might take the place of the wonderful Sharon Stone and Jeanne Tripplehorn.
