After the dynastic intrigues of House of the Dragon, the new chapter set in Westeros chooses a different path. Based on the short stories by George R. R. Martin and developed by Ira Parker, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reduces the scale of the narrative without sacrificing the spirit that made Game of Thrones famous.

Comprising 6 episodes, the first season follows Ser Duncan, a hedge knight without wealth or noble origins, accompanied by his young squire Egg. Their journey to a tournament becomes an opportunity to explore a world of chivalric codes, personal ambitions, and secrets destined to carry far more weight than they seem.

Fantasy changes perspective

The tone alternates between lightness and tougher moments, with brilliant dialogues, ironic situations, and sudden explosions of violence, maintaining the narrative identity typical of the universe created by Martin. Even the secondary characters are well-developed, while Prince Aerion embodies an antagonistic figure capable of recalling the great villains of the main saga without limiting his own personality.

Lower budget compared to previous productions set in Westeros. The series intelligently utilizes its staging and culminates in a clash that demonstrates how spectacle and tension can arise even without large-scale effects. A convincing debut that expands Martin's universe with a more intimate and personal, yet no less engaging, style.

Digitally shot at native 4.5K resolution (Arri Alexa Mini LF) and finalized in 4K (hopefully the CGI is at the same level), image format “Univisium” 2.00:1 (3840 x 2160/23.97p), HEVC encoding on 2x BD-100 triple layer discs. The UHD edition offers a top-tier transfer, with HDR-10/Dolby Vision enhancing a deliberately restrained cinematography, enriching nuances and depth even in the darkest scenes. The detail is excellent, especially in fabrics and set elements, while the limited use of CGI gives the entire series a more authentic and natural look, maintaining a good balance of credibility. Convincing blacks. The amaray does not include the 2K version discs.

Space is tight for any audio track other than English, which is the only one to benefit from an excellent Dolby TrueHD 7.1 with ATMOS objects (16 bit), providing constant immersion thanks to rich environmental effects well-distributed across the surround channels. Dan Romer's soundtrack integrates perfectly with the mix, while some sequences, like the first-person joust from inside Dunk's helmet, utilize directionality and spatiality to create a remarkable sense of tension. Crystal-clear dialogue from the center channel and good subwoofer depth. The Italian audio is barely sufficient with a Dolby Digital 5.1 (640 kbps) that is significantly less effective and dynamic.

The extras total approximately 145 minutes and include in-depth features for each episode, an extensive making-of on the series' production, featurettes on the protagonists, a tour of the Ashford Meadow set, a brief introduction by George R. R. Martin, and a fun blooper reel. A rich package that delves into the production, set design, characters, and behind-the-scenes of the filming. Italian subtitles included.
