With The Mandalorian and Grogu, the Star Wars universe brings two of the most popular characters from its recent phase back to cinemas. The film is a direct continuation of the journey started by The Mandalorian series, but it also marks a significant step for Lucasfilm, which entrusts Din Djarin and Grogu with the franchise's return to the big screen. Here's all the information!

When is The Mandalorian and Grogu set?

The Mandalorian and Grogu continues the journey started by The Mandalorian series and brings Din Djarin and Grogu to cinemas in a new phase of their story. The starting point is set after the fall of the Galactic Empire, at a time when the New Republic is trying to consolidate its control, while Imperial warlords remain a widespread threat in the galaxy.

The Plot of The Mandalorian and Grogu

Din Djarin is enlisted by the New Republic along with his apprentice Grogu. The mission places them in a scenario that already emerged at the end of the third season of the series, but the film is presented as a standalone adventure designed for the big screen. At its core remains the relationship between the two protagonists, called to act in a galaxy that has not yet found true balance after the end of Imperial power.

Official information does not provide complete details on the narrative structure, but it is clear that the film will move between action sequences and the return of figures linked to the recent expanded universe of Star Wars. The anticipations released through trailers and public presentations primarily emphasize the adventurous dimension of the project, while maintaining a certain secrecy about its main plot points.

The Cast of The Mandalorian and Grogu

Pedro Pascal (also known for The Last of Us, Game of Thrones, Narcos, Fantastic Four - The Beginnings) returns as Din Djarin, the Mandalorian who in recent years has become one of the central faces of the Disney era of Star Wars. Alongside him is, of course, Grogu, a character brought to life with animatronics and puppetry integrated with visual effects, a choice that continues to be central to his expressiveness.

Among the new names, Sigourney Weaver (Avatar, Aliens - Final Showdown, Gorillas in the Mist, Ghostbusters: Afterlife) stands out, playing Ward, a New Republic colonel and leader of the Adelphi Rangers. Jeremy Allen White (The Bear, Springsteen - Deliver Me from Nowhere, The Warrior: The Iron Claw) lends his voice to Rotta the Hutt, Jabba's son. Also notable is the return of Jonny Coyne (The Toxic Avenger, The Hangover Part III, The Blacklist) as the leader of a faction of Imperial remnants.

The film also brings back some characters already known from other franchise productions. Dave Filoni reprises his role as New Republic pilot Trapper Wolf, while Steve Blum returns as the voice of Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios. Also indicated are the bounty hunter Embo, Jabba's twin cousins already seen in The Book of Boba Fett, and members of the Anzellan species. Among the more unusual curiosities is the presence of Martin Scorsese as the voice of an Ardennian shopkeeper.

When is The Mandalorian and Grogu released in Italy?

In Italy, The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released on May 20, 2026, two days earlier than its distribution in the United States.

Will The Mandalorian and Grogu arrive on Disney+ streaming?

Initially, the film will be released exclusively in cinemas. This is a significant step, as it marks the return of Star Wars to the big screen after years in which the brand found its main expansion ground in streaming series. The feature film therefore also represents an industrial test for the cinematic future of the franchise.

Although there are no official confirmations yet, it is plausible that The Mandalorian and Grogu will arrive on Disney+ after its theatrical run concludes.

The Runtime of The Mandalorian and Grogu

The Mandalorian and Grogu is expected to run for approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes.

The Director of The Mandalorian and Grogu

The film is directed by Jon Favreau, a key figure in the creation and development of The Mandalorian. Favreau also co-wrote the screenplay with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor.

His presence behind the camera strengthens the continuity with the series, but the project originated at a different stage than initially planned for the franchise. Favreau and Filoni had indeed written a fourth season of The Mandalorian, which was then reconsidered when Lucasfilm decided to prioritize a film. This led to an adaptation that transformed that storyline into a narrative conceived for the big screen.

The cinematic production also necessitated a change of scale, especially visually. Favreau spoke about the need to design images and effects for the big screen, while keeping the characters and their connection with the audience at the center.
