X-Men, Repent Debuts: The New Mutant Exorcist Enters Gambit's Crisis
Created by Gail Simone and Luciano Vecchio, the character appears in Uncanny X-Men #34 and will play a central role in the conclusion of the Wild Ride arc.

Marvel has introduced Repent, a new mutant connected to the supernatural side of the X-Men. The character debuts in Uncanny X-Men #34, released on August 19, 2026, written by Gail Simone and drawn by Luciano Vecchio. The official Marvel page presents Repent as a still mysterious figure within Wild Ride, the story arc built around the progressive worsening of Gambit's condition.
However, the character's nature had been anticipated before its release. In an interview with AIPT, Vecchio defined Repent as a "mutant exorcist", a mutant exorcist co-created with Simone. The same arc also brings back Gabriel the Devil-Hunter, a Marvel character born in the seventies, as Rogue seeks a solution to the transformation affecting her husband.
Previews of upcoming issues also clarify that his involvement will not be marginal. The description of Uncanny X-Men #35 defines Repent as the last hope for a mutant in danger, while that of the following issue attributes him the title of Harbinger of Demons, explaining that he will be willing to make an extreme sacrifice to free an X-Man from what he considers a murderous possession.
However, Marvel continues to keep several elements hidden. Repent's origin, the precise nature of his powers, and the meaning of the title Harbinger of Demons have not yet been fully explained. His debut in Uncanny X-Men #34 therefore primarily serves to open a new supernatural component in Gambit's story, destined to develop in the next chapters of Wild Ride.
