Star Wars: Battlefront 2 - KYBER: The MOD that hints at 3
Will we ever get a third installment?
Star Wars: Battlefront 2: every time someone mentions it, somewhere in the world someone reinstalls it [OK: originally this meme referred to Deus Ex, but times change...]. This is a metaphor for the fact that the multiplayer shooter developed by DICE for Electronic Arts in George Lucas's galaxy far, far away is still, over 8 years after its launch, an absolutely enjoyable title and, above all, one that has not been replicated.
Last year, the game also enjoyed a second youth, thanks mainly to the success of the TV series Star Wars: Andor, which we reviewed: in May, it climbed the sales charts, and in June, it set a new record for concurrent online players. This is enough to say that the game is still popular, and it's easy to see how fans are now dreaming more intensely of a Battlefront 3.
...However, Battlefront 3 is currently absent from the agendas of DICE, Electronic Arts, and Disney, owner of Lucasfilm and the rights to the Star Wars saga. So what to do?
A team of fans has the answer, releasing a MOD in public Beta whose development actually began years ago: the title is KYBER [named after the crystals that power both lightsabers and the Death Star's cannon], and it can be downloaded from the project's official website.
KYBER: Battlefront 2 is, according to those who have tried it, essentially Battlefront 2 with new weapons, new classes, new characters, and some extra balancing. Among the new heroes/villains introduced are, for example, Cal Kestis from Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Asajj Ventress from the Clone Wars series [and The Bad Batch]. The MOD also introduces spectator mode and proximity chat and even implements Discord support.
The Public Beta of KYBER was released last December: although it initially went somewhat unnoticed, there are already talks of 61,169 unique participants and 1,339,489 activated game sessions: truly interesting figures for what we remember to be an amateur project.
