Do you remember RuneScape? It was released in 2001, an era when MMOs were still in their infancy, and at the time, it achieved enormous popularity. This month, the game celebrated 25 years of existence: although less popular than it once was, it's still available on PC and mobile devices. Its developer, the English studio Jagex, has shared a 2026 roadmap to announce what it considers the beginning of a new era.

Treasure Hunter has been removed

RuneScape intends to regain its integrity: to do so, starting today, January 19, Treasure Hunter, the loot box system, is abolished. At the strong request of users, pay-to-win elements are thus purged: from now on, microtransactions will focus on cosmetic items. Anyone who still has any of the incriminated items in their inventory will be able to consume them during the year.

The renewal process also includes a graphical restyling: the interface has been improved to be classic, yet cleaner and more functional. The appearance of certain areas and various visual elements have been refined. For the future, Jagex has big plans: in the coming months, Havenhythe, the largest area ever to appear in the game, will arrive, along with a major overhaul of the housing system and Leagues II mode.

Furthermore, Jagex will make balancing and improvements to multiple elements of the game: for example, starting in February, the combat system will receive a significant refresh. To learn more about the numerous changes RuneScape will undergo in 2026, check out the official website.
