Return of the Living Dead to get a new official sequel
The plot will revolve around a new drug called “Trioxin Trash,” capable of transforming users
The universe of Return of the Living Dead is preparing to expand again, this time following a different path from the famous '80s films. Rebirth of the Living Dead has been announced, a new independent horror film that will serve as a direct sequel to the original novel written in 1978 by John A. Russo.
A long-time collaborator of George A. Romero and co-writer of Night of the Living Dead, Russo will participate in the project as a producer. The film will not be directly connected to the famous cinematic version directed by Dan O'Bannon in 1985, but will instead pick up the mythology of the original novel.
Trioxin, Zombies, and Underground Horror
The plot will revolve around a new drug called “Trioxin Trash,” capable of transforming users into brain-hungry living dead. At the center of the story will be a young couple who, after an assault in the woods, find refuge with an ostracized scientist who uses a disturbing “pain therapy” to control hunger.
Dustin Ferguson will direct, while the cast will include Barbara Magnolfi and Brinke Stevens. The release of Rebirth of the Living Dead in US theaters is scheduled for October 1, 2026; the fate of the work in our country is currently uncertain, likely destined for direct-to-streaming.
