One element that distinguishes the new Resident Evil from previous cinematic adaptations is the fact that Zach Cregger doesn't seem interested in simply reconstructing what players know about the video game horror universe. The director has chosen an original story set during the T-Virus outbreak, updating the 1998 context without turning the film into a period reconstruction.

At the center is the character played by Austin Abrams, called to survive in a situation where even resource management becomes part of the tension. Ammunition and items are therefore not just scenic details, but directly recall one of the most recognizable dynamics of the Capcom video game.

Cregger has also clarified that he does not want to fill the film with creatures too tied to the video game imagination. Zombies and mutated animals seem to play an important role, but he continues to remain tight-lipped about the threats that might appear later.

Raccoon City is not where it all begins

A particularly interesting anticipation concerns the structure of the story itself. The protagonist does not immediately arrive in Raccoon City: the first thirty minutes shown in preview have in fact suggested that the journey to the city will only be part of a much broader escalation.

The tone could also hold surprises. Cregger recounted that he wrote Resident Evil during the same creative period as Weapons and The Flood, identifying some thematic affinities among the three projects. The declared inspiration for the rhythm, however, comes from Resident Evil 4, while the horror should primarily look to the more claustrophobic atmospheres of the modern episodes.

The highly anticipated film will arrive in Italian cinemas on September 17, 2026.
