Precognition: The FMV Game Announcement
Remember those games with live-action cutscenes?
For those unfamiliar, FMV is an acronym referring to video games that use videos with real actors as the primary means of storytelling. This particular technique, whose full name is Full Motion Video, experienced its golden age around the mid-90s, only to fall into oblivion. In the current century, FMV has made a comeback thanks to Her Story, created by English game designer Sam Barlow.
Details on Precognition
Half Mermaid, a New York studio founded by Barlow himself, in collaboration with publisher Kinetic, has announced Precognition. The Full Motion Video technique will be used for a sci-fi horror story, co-written by Barlow alongside Brandon Cronenberg, a director specializing in horror (yes, in case you were wondering, he is indeed David Cronenberg's son).
Precognition will tell the story of Diana, a former child prodigy who has had a cerebral implant installed. The artificial implant gives her the ability to see brief moments of her own future, which will allow her to change it. How to change it will be up to the players to decide: Half Mermaid is designing an ambitious narrative structure, in which the user has great freedom to shape future events through choices.
Where and When Precognition Will Be Released
Before you can see Diana's possible futures, you'll have to wait a while: the launch window for Precognition has been provisionally set for spring 2028. Full Motion Video will return to prominence on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (Steam).
