Apple TV+ has decided to halt production of Palm Royale, a series set in late 1960s Palm Beach, stopping after 2 seasons for a total of 20 episodes. The decision marks the platform's first significant cancellation of 2026.

The choice is surprising because the show, while not a huge public phenomenon, had received positive critical acclaim. In particular, the first season garnered 11 Emmy nominations, demonstrating its good reception within the television industry.

Unfortunately, however, in the streaming landscape, critical recognition is not always enough. Platforms primarily evaluate a series' ability to attract viewers and generate continuous interest. According to several industry analysts, Palm Royale failed to achieve solid enough numbers to justify its continuation.

Critical Success Isn't Enough

The second season still manages to offer a relatively satisfying conclusion to the story. In the finale, a dramatic event profoundly changes the relationships between some central characters, hinting at developments that were likely intended for a sequel that will not see the light of day.

The series was led by Kristen Wiig in the role of Maxine Simmons, a woman determined to make her way into the exclusive social elite of Palm Beach in 1969. Alongside her were experienced performers such as Allison Janney, Laura Dern, Carol Burnett, and certainly not least, Ricky Martin.

Despite a prominent cast and good reviews, Palm Royale thus concludes its run, becoming yet another example of a production that was appreciated but unable to transform into a true public success.
