Onslaught: Adam Wingard Returns to His Roots with A24
The project reunites the director with Simon Barrett, creative partner on titles like You're Next and The Guest
A24 has released the first trailer for Onslaught, a new film directed by Adam Wingard that marks the director's return to territory closer to the works that defined his career before he moved on to Hollywood blockbusters.
The project reunites Wingard with screenwriter Simon Barrett, creative partner on titles like You're Next and The Guest. The protagonist is an army sharpshooter played by Adria Arjona, forced to intervene when a group of genetically modified supersoldiers escapes control in the desert, endangering her daughter. At least in part, something not so different from Emmerich's 1992 Universal Soldier.
A Return to the Spirit of The Guest
After directing high-budget productions like Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Wingard seems to have chosen a different path. The trailer's visuals indeed recall the atmosphere and identity of The Guest, the 2014 thriller that helped transform him into a cult director for genre enthusiasts.
The resemblance is such that some of the audience has begun to speculate about a connection between the two films, although there are no official confirmations at the moment. The cast also includes Rebecca Hall, Dan Stevens, Michael Biehn, Reginald VelJohnson, Eric Wareheim, Drew Starkey, and UFC champion Alex Pereira.
Onslaught will arrive in US cinemas on September 4, 2026. A release in the same period in Italy is also possible.
