The Rockford Files Returns to TV with David Boreanaz
The goal is to preserve what made Jim Rockford such a popular detective
After numerous attempts that remained on paper, The Rockford Files is ready to return to the small screen. The American network NBC has greenlit a new version of the historic detective series and has chosen David Boreanaz to take on the legacy of James Garner, star of the original which aired between the seventies and eighties.
Known for long-running roles in Angel, Bones, and SEAL Team, the actor explained that he does not want to reinterpret the character in a radically different way. The goal is to preserve what made Jim Rockford such a popular detective, while adapting him to a contemporary context.
Contemporary Reinterpretation for the Famous Detective
The information that has emerged so far indicates that the new production will retain several iconic elements of the original series. Rockford will continue to be a private investigator often grappling with situations bigger than himself, forced to navigate between criminals, old contacts, and complicated cases. Some historic symbols should also remain in place, including the famous Pontiac Firebird that accompanied the character throughout his television career.
NBC seems to want to focus on familiarity, aiming not to leave the aftertaste of a simple nostalgic exercise. The project has already received an order for a full season, a sign of much greater confidence compared to previous attempts to revive the series.
Filming will resume in the fall in Southern California, while the debut is scheduled for early next year. For David Boreanaz, this is a new challenge and an opportunity to take on the legacy of Jim Rockford.
