Over twenty years after the release of The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson is nearing the conclusion of the sequel dedicated to the resurrection of Christ. According to Lionsgate, the project has entered its final stages of production after what studio executives described as an "enormous" production.

Titled The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, the film is not expected to merely recount the events following the crucifixion. Gibson has reportedly constructed a much broader and more visionary narrative, with sequences dedicated to the fall of angels and even the descent into hell.

Early previews describe a work with an almost mystical and apocalyptic tone, far from a classic religious blockbuster. The idea is to expand the spiritual universe already glimpsed in the original film, blending theological elements, symbolism, and strongly evocative imagery. Jim Caviezel will not return to the cast, having been the historical face of Jesus in the first chapter. The main role will be entrusted to Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen.

Lionsgate will distribute the work in two parts in the USA: the first will arrive on March 26, 2027 (Good Friday), while the second is scheduled for May 6, coinciding with the Ascension period. It is very probable that these same dates will coincide with the Italian distribution
