Marvel Unveils Punisher-Focused Avengers Arc, Expected in 2027

At San Diego Comic-Con, the largest comic book convention in the United States, Marvel closed its panel dedicated to the ongoing event Avengers: Armageddon by showing a teaser — a promotional preview image — that points straight to 2027: a cracked Punisher skull, immersed in a red glow, and a stark phrase, «First you avenge, then you punish». It's the announcement, for now only visual, of The Red Line, the second arc of the new ongoing Avengers series — an arc is a self-contained story within the title — focused on the Punisher and expected in 2027.

The title relaunches on November 4, 2026 with Avengers #1, written by Chip Zdarsky and drawn by Marco Checchetto — the same duo from Daredevil (2019) — and emerges from the wreckage of Avengers: Armageddon, the five-issue miniseries (by Zdarsky, Diaz, and Alpizar) in which the Marvel universe is profoundly reshaped. The team that emerges has been dubbed "Earth's Mightiest Survivors" (a variation on the usual "Earth's Mightiest Heroes") and brings together Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and a sixth member yet to be revealed, described by Marvel as a new hero.

Regarding the Punisher's role in The Red Line, Marvel has released almost nothing: neither the creative team for the arc nor the plot. The only comment came from Zdarsky during the panel: «The only thing I'll say is that Frank Castle is fun to write». The teaser deliberately leaves open the central question, which is whether Castle will join the team or oppose it. Some specialized publications have speculated that he might be the unannounced sixth member, but this is a supposition, not a confirmation.

The doubt is not accidental. Frank Castle originates as a solitary vigilante: after the murder of his family by organized crime, he dedicates his existence to punishing criminals of the same type with violence. He has brushed against the Avengers multiple times, without ever being a stable member, and in several stories, he has been their antagonist. His method — systematic killing — is incompatible with the ethos of heroes like Spider-Man or Captain Marvel; less so with Wolverine, who is already part of the new group and also accustomed to violence. It is on this friction that the tension of the arc seems to be built.

The move comes in a year of strong exposure for the character, whom Marvel is also pushing in cinema: it is rumored that Jon Bernthal's version — the actor who plays the Punisher in Marvel's live-action productions — will have a prominent role in upcoming Avengers films, but these are unconfirmed rumors at the moment. On the comic book front, the knot that The Red Line will have to untangle is precisely what the teaser stages: to what extent a team created to "protect" can absorb a character who exists to cross that line.
