Is Epic Games Developing a Disney Shooter with AI?

Let generative AI create the game: what could possibly go wrong?

If there's one thing that has a bad reputation in the world of video games, it's generative artificial intelligence. A good portion of enthusiasts do not look favorably (to put it mildly) on content created using this tool, and it's hard to blame them, considering that currently, AI-generated assets certainly don't exhibit the same care (another euphemism) as those that follow a creative process worthy of the name.

Is Epic Games Falling Back on AI?

Unfortunately for enthusiasts, replacing the work of flesh-and-blood designers with AI is much faster and above all cheaper, which is why the industry is pushing towards greater automation of the process. A large company like Epic Games has already been caught in the past indulging excessively in the use of AI (compare here and here), but according to a new report from Bloomberg, it could do even worse in the future.

Apparently, Epic Games is working on a licensed Disney shooter, which would include characters drawn from the Marvel and Star Wars franchises. The game in question was scheduled for March 2027, but is also severely delayed, thus postponed indefinitely. How to make up for lost time? Here the matter takes a sinister turn. According to the report, those leading the project have asked developers to adopt an approach that prioritizes the use of AI.

Specifically, from now on, team members should not write even a single line of code, leaving AI agents like Claude to handle it. Furthermore, all game graphics should be created with AI-based workflows. These requests sound so absurd that even the developers were reportedly stunned. We have reported the entire story using the conditional tense, because we hope it's just a big misunderstanding, but we are not too confident.
