Disney Prepares Medusa Film with Dwayne Johnson
The new production could offer a different perspective on the character
Disney is developing a live-action film dedicated to Medusa, the famous Gorgon of Greek mythology capable of turning anyone who meets her gaze into stone. According to Deadline, the project is in its early stages and will involve Seven Bucks Productions, the company founded by Dwayne Johnson along with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia.
The first draft of the screenplay will be entrusted to Michael Montemayor, who is also working on the new live-action adaptation of Rapunzel – Tangled.
Dwayne Johnson Behind the Scenes
“The Rock’s” involvement is currently limited to production: there are no plans for him to star. Matt Smith is also among the producers, through his company Electro Corduroy Entertainment. Details about the story are still under wraps, with Disney aiming for an original reinterpretation of the mythological figure, without yet announcing a director, cast, or possible release window.
In Greek tradition, Medusa was the only mortal of the three Gorgons, sister to Stheno and Euryale. Her story is primarily linked to the feat of Perseus, who managed to decapitate her using a shield as a mirror to avoid her gaze. A story that has already found its way to cinema, particularly in the two versions of Clash of the Titans from 1981 and Clash of the Titans from 2010. The new production could offer a different perspective on the character, but Disney has not yet indicated which interpretation it intends to adopt.
