Highguard, the new free-to-play FPS from Wildlights Entertainment, debuted as scheduled on January 26th: not having gone through a public beta-testing phase, more or less everyone expected some initial problems, and in fact that's exactly what happened.

The developers, on the other hand, promised that a Patch would be released shortly to promptly resolve the most serious issues, according to a roadmap that aims to have the product fully functional by spring, a timeframe in which the first expansion will be released.

It must be said that the team kept its word, because Patch 1.0.4 was released yesterday, bringing with it a series of fixes and upgrades for both PC and consoles. "We just pushed out a patch with numerous improvements, including FOV slider on console, ADS and crouch options, many video settings and more - reads the Patch-Note released by Wildlight - The team is working on further improvements and optimizations, they just need a few more days." Among other things, a bothersome bug on PS5 that caused the software to crash at the end of a match has also been removed.

Highguard and User Criticism

Highguard, due to initial problems, probably got off on the wrong foot and initially received a plethora of negative reviews on Steam. After a few days of breaking in and especially after the launch of this new patch, things seem to be starting to improve, and ratings are now settling at an "average" value. On the other hand, the peak user count has dropped from almost 100,000 in the first few days to less than 10,000, so it's possible that we are simply witnessing a culling after the initial hype.

The most frequent criticisms still concern poor performance on PC and excessively vast and empty environments for a 3vs3 title: while the Wildlight team has started working on the former, for the latter problem, we will presumably have to wait for the actual spring update.

Highguard is available free-to-play on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
