Hearthstone will return to the origins of Azeroth with Reign of the Black Empire, a new expansion announced by Blizzard during BlizzCon 2026 and arriving on October 20.

As explained by Blizzard in the official BlizzCon announcement recap, the new set will be set during the era of the Black Empire, when the Old Gods dominated Azeroth before their clash with the Titans. A very remote period in Warcraft history that will allow the card game to return to characters and events related to the very birth of the world.

The main gameplay novelty is Assemble, a new keyword that will allow players to fuse two cards to create a new one. The system can draw from a pool of over 250 cards, leaving room for a high number of different combinations. Reign of the Black Empire thus marks a new return of the Old Gods to Hearthstone, who were already protagonists of some of the most recognizable expansions in the game's history, but this time placed directly in the period when they exercised their dominion over Azeroth.

Blizzard has also anticipated other news for the future of Hearthstone, including the arrival of the Monk as a new playable class in March 2027.
