A supernatural thriller starring Benedict Cumberbatch, full of surprises and an unexpected aspect ratio
Grief Is the Thing with Feathers is the adaptation of Grief Is the Thing with Feathers, with Dylan Southern attempting to transform grief into a visual experience. The result, however, remains suspended, unable to fully commit to a direction.
The story follows a father grappling with two young children after a devastating loss, forced to face alone a pain that seeps into every daily gesture. Beside him, an unsettling figure takes shape: it observes him, provokes him, accompanies him, like a wound that refuses to heal.
A Symbol That Doesn't Become a Story
The idea is powerful, almost primordial, but on screen it struggles to find a complete structure. The work prefers to evoke rather than narrate, accumulating visual suggestions without building a true emotional journey.
Benedict Cumberbatch emerges with force, carrying the entire structure with an intense and controlled performance. His character is a broken man, and the actor manages to convey every crack with authenticity, even when the writing falters.
The crow, a central figure laden with meaning, remains more an intuition than a truly incisive presence. The film oscillates between psychological tension and family drama without ever landing a decisive blow, leaving the viewer in an undefined zone. In the end, Grief Is the Thing with Feathers impresses with its atmosphere but lacks depth: it captivates the eye, without truly managing to delve into the pain it portrays.
Partially compromising the narrative impact this time is the artistic choice to shoot with an aspect ratio of 1.33:1, a “square” format that prevents a wider lateral opening of the image, especially in moments when the protagonist dialogues with the crow. Image at 1920 x 1080 resolution (24p), AVC/MPEG-4 encoding on a single-layer BD-25. Overall very good quality, with limitations in the prominence of details in the background and on backdrops, with blacks that give the impression of a depth linked to the choices of the native footage (Arri Alexa 35 and 4.6K resolution).

Audio rendering is very good with dual DTS-HD MA 5.1 Italian and English tracks (16 bit), with the original to be preferred for superior emotional depth, excellent soundstage presence, and good depth of low-frequency elements (LFE). The mirrored Dolby Digital 2.0 (224 kbps) tracks have less impact. The extras include the trailer.
