Future Ruins, the ambitious festival conceived by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (photo below), has been canceled. Intended as a celebration of the best film and television scores, the event was scheduled to take place on November 8th at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center.

The organizers released a statement on social media explaining that “various logistical difficulties” prevented them from guaranteeing the artistic experience envisioned from the start. Perhaps, but a record industry friend told us that ticket pre-sales did not go as hoped. Rather than offering a reduced or compromised version of the project, Reznor and Ross decided to suspend the inaugural edition and “completely rethink” the format. Refunds will be issued automatically.

Logistical Difficulties or Few Tickets Sold?

The festival would have brought together an extraordinary ensemble of composers: from John Carpenter to Danny Elfman, passing through Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin, Howard Shore, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Cristobal Tapia de Veer, and Mark Mothersbaugh, up to Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein of Stranger Things. Also planned was a tribute to Curtis Mayfield curated by Questlove.

The cancellation just weeks before the event represents a major blow to a project that promised to become a unique meeting point between cinema and music. It is not yet clear if Future Ruins will return in 2026, but knowing Reznor's determination, it is not excluded that the dream could be reborn from its own “ruins.”
