Firefly, something is stirring for the return of Serenity

For Firefly, the road to a new chapter remains anything but simple, but Nathan Fillion doesn't seem intent on giving up. The actor provided an update on the animated project during the promotion of Lanterns, implying that the current problem isn't so much about production as it is about finding someone willing to finance and distribute it.

The idea of bringing the Serenity crew back to the screen was confirmed last March, when Fillion and other cast members of the series revealed the existence of a concrete project. Since then, there hasn't been a real breakthrough. Fillion admitted that the process is slow, but he also reiterated that he has no intention of giving up. The support received from the public, he said, continues to be an important driving force.

Serenity could return to traverse space

The project is being developed by Collision33 in collaboration with 20th Television Animation and can count on Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters, already associated with the original series, as creative leads. The story is expected to be set between Firefly and the film Serenity, thus allowing the original crew lineup to be brought back without altering the events already told.

The planned voice cast is also from the series: in addition to Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Adam Baldwin are involved. The real sticking point, however, remains distribution. The project has not yet found a platform ready to take on the legacy of Firefly. And after a full 24 years, it's inevitable to wonder if someone will finally be willing to bring Serenity back into space.
