The Dissidia: Final Fantasy franchise was born in 2008 on the PSP console with the eponymous game which, as can be gathered from the name, is a spinoff of the famous JRPG series. In Dissidia, Square Enix abandons the usual Japanese role-playing to embrace the mechanics of another genre, that of beat 'em ups: after its debut on PSP, the experiment has been re-proposed several times and will return in 2026, with a new installment.

Square Enix has announced Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy, a free-to-play mobile title with microtransactions. DDFF will tell a story set in the present day, in Tokyo: here the most iconic characters from the Final Fantasy universe must join forces to save the world. The series' beloved characters will feature new outfits, with a contemporary look. The game is described as a "3vs3 Team Boss Battle Arena": in other words, players will have to lead teams of three characters to defeat bosses in the shortest possible time.
The game promises to offer simple controls, but the battles should not lack a certain tactical depth. Before clashing with the boss, it will be essential to accumulate a resource, Bravery, by defeating minor enemies: it goes without saying that the greater the Bravery, the greater the team's power will become. Characters will be able to use numerous special abilities and will be divided into four roles: melee, ranged, support, and agile.
