Changes within the project's external environment are also complicating its path

The cinematic adaptation of BioShock is still in the works, but Francis Lawrence has not yet resolved all the issues separating the project from the set. The director confirmed his involvement in the development, but did not indicate a start date for filming.

The main difficulty concerns the construction of the protagonist. In the 2007 video game, the exploration of the underwater city of Rapture is directly entrusted to the player, whereas a film must give narrative autonomy to the character who drives the story. Lawrence considers this very transition one of the most complex aspects of the adaptation.

Netflix, the production uncertainty remains

Complicating the path are also the changes at the top of the platform. The director hopes that Netflix's internal reorganizations will not jeopardize the project, reiterating his interest in bringing it to the screen. The live-action adaptation was announced in 2022, with Michael Green writing the screenplay and Lawrence directing. The film rights had already passed from Universal in 2008, without the previous attempt reaching production.

It is not yet clear whether the film will faithfully follow Jack's story or tell an original tale set in Rapture. Lawrence is also attached to other projects such as Red Rising, an adaptation of Pierce Brown's sci-fi novel set on Mars, where a young miner belonging to the oppressed caste of the “Reds” infiltrates the privileged “Golds” to overthrow the social order. This film is also in development for Paramount.
