The first official images of American Hostage hint at a series very different from classic TV crime shows built solely on action and plot twists. At the center of the story is Fred Heckman, a famous radio personality played by Jon Hamm, who becomes involved in a kidnapping case that will also engulf his personal life.

The new MGM+ production is inspired by a true event that occurred in the United States in 1977. A heavily indebted man took his financial advisor hostage and began contacting Heckman's radio show live, turning the entire affair into a media spectacle followed by thousands of listeners.

A Series Focused Entirely on Emotional Tension

According to Shawn Ryan, the series creator, Hamm's character represents one of the most morally conflicted men ever portrayed by the actor. The story, in fact, does not revolve solely around the kidnapper, but above all around the psychological toll the event takes on the host.

The series will also delve into Heckman's family relationships, greatly expanding on the original podcast material from which the project is adapted. Great attention is also paid to the reconstruction of the 1970s, including radio studios, tense atmospheres, and a constant sense of claustrophobia.

For MGM+, American Hostage could become one of the most important series of the upcoming streaming season.
