Spider-Noir takes Spider-Man in an unusual direction for contemporary superhero serials. The series starring Nicolas Cage reinterprets the character's imagery through the language of noir, shifting the action to 1930s New York and choosing Ben Reilly, here transformed into a private investigator tormented by his past, as the protagonist.

The plot of Spider-Noir: what is it about?

The series follows Ben Reilly, a private investigator in decline in 1930s New York. In the past, he was known as The Spider, the city's only superhero, but a personal tragedy led him to abandon that life.

The arrival of a new case, however, forces him to confront what he had tried to leave behind. The narrative core of Spider-Noir seems to move between criminal investigations and unresolved identities. The hero, in this case, is not portrayed as a luminous or salvific figure, but as a disillusioned man, drawn back into a world he had tried to escape.

The cast of Spider-Noir, the series with Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage plays Ben Reilly, aka The Spider. This is his first leading role in a television series. The actor had previously voiced Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but this incarnation belongs to a different narrative context.

The cast also includes Lamorne Morris as Robbie Robertson, a freelance journalist and friend of Reilly, Li Jun Li as Cat Hardy, a nightclub singer involved in a criminal conspiracy, and Karen Rodriguez as Janet, the protagonist's secretary and investigative collaborator.

Jack Huston plays Flint Marko, i.e., Sandman, while Abraham Popoola plays Lonnie Lincoln, known as Tombstone. Brendan Gleeson will play Silvermane, an Irish crime boss linked to Reilly's past. Other names involved include Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Amy Aquino, and Andrew Robinson in recurring roles.

Is Spider-Noir part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Spider-Noir is not presented as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The available information indicates that the series is set in an alternate universe within Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

The project is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios and is conceived as a reinterpretation of the Spider-Man Noir character. The series does not use Peter Parker as the protagonist, but Ben Reilly. In the comics, the character is linked to Spider-Man's mythology in a different way, while here he is reinterpreted to adapt to the noir tone of the work.

Spider-Noir in dual version: color and black and white

Spider-Noir will be available in both black and white, through the format defined as Authentic Black and White, and in a color version called True-Hue Full Color.

The monochromatic version directly recalls classic noir cinema and the imagery of 1930s New York. The color version, on the other hand, aims for a more saturated rendering, closer to the Technicolor aesthetic. During filming, tools and filters were used to preserve marked shadows and an atmosphere consistent with the noir visual language.
