Xbox is transforming its production structure through a process that started very painfully, with thousands of layoffs and the downsizing of game development teams, and is now moving through the birth of realities that are not limited to the creation of video games in the strict sense, but rather frame them in a broader context. An example of this is the newly formed division Xbox XP.

What is Xbox Labs

The idea behind the lab was born by looking at the activity of those who decompile video games and then rebuild them on another platform, or from the source code of other titles. As explained by Asha Sharma on Xbox Wire, these experiments have challenged established industry assumptions, such as the link between software and hardware or how people discover and experience games.

Sharma sees great potential in all of this: games can reach a wider audience, old titles can find new life, and more enthusiasts can become creators or co-creators. To seize these opportunities, Xbox Labs was established, formed by a small group of developers, engineers, and scientists, whose task is precisely to experiment with video games.

Xbox Labs will look around, seeking to learn from those who have already carried out similar experiments, in order to create tools that can be made available to developers and gamers. The success of individual operations will be measured in terms of engagement, i.e., based on the number of people playing and creating.
