Tom Cruise Reveals Why He's Never Directed a Film

Tom Cruise could have made his directorial debut a long time ago, but there's a specific reason why he continues to prefer the role of actor and producer. As a guest on the New Heights podcast, he explained that working with different filmmakers allows him to continuously learn and engage with new perspectives.
"If I'm directing, I can't do that," he said, referring to the ability to support the directors he collaborates with. It's an interest he's cultivated since childhood, when friends suggested he try directing.
The Set is a Place to Keep Learning
The actor also described his approach to filming: no retreating to trailers between scenes, but rather a desire to stay with the crew, observe the work, and discuss with those making the film. For example, in Top Gun: Maverick, his contribution went beyond acting, participating in the cast's preparation for aerial sequences, helping to make possible filming on fighter jets that required the performers to face real flight conditions.
For now, then, directing can wait. Not because Cruise feels unprepared, but because being alongside other filmmakers offers him an experience he doesn't want to miss. And his words don't close the door to a future debut: he simply doesn't seem to be in a hurry.
