The Mummy universe continues to take shape, and according to the latest rumors, Michael Johnston has entered the early stages of negotiations with Universal to join the cast of the fourth chapter of the saga. Fresh off the success of Obsession, the actor would represent one of the key pieces of the project, which aims to bring back the historical protagonists alongside a new generation.

Although the Studio has not yet confirmed the role, the most accredited hypothesis is that Johnston could play Alex O'Connell, son of Rick and Evelyn. The new film would indeed pick up the events of The Mummy Returns from 2001, setting aside the continuity introduced by the third installment and bringing the original family core back to the center.

The project is expected to mark the return of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, joined by John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, and Kevin J. O'Connor. Directing duties are anticipated to fall to the duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Radio Silence), while the screenplay is penned by David Coggeshall, with Sean Daniel once again involved as producer.

After the less successful attempts in recent years to relaunch the Universal Monsters, the choice seems to be to restart with the formula that made the series famous. If the deal with Johnston goes through, the character of Alex could become the link between the return of the O'Connells and the future of the saga, expected in theaters in mid-October 2027.
