A24 is expanding the cast for The Masque of the Red Death, a new cinematic reinterpretation of Edgar Allan Poe's famous gothic tale, welcoming Léa Seydoux alongside Mikey Madison. The news comes from international sources and confirms the ambition of a project that promises to radically and provocatively subvert the original imagery.

The film is written and directed by Charlie Polinger, also the author of The Plague, described as a heavily revisionist version, imbued with black humor and extreme tones. At the center of the story is a mad prince who, while a plague devastates the populace, offers refuge to the nobility within his castle. Into this decadent microcosm of excess, intrigue, and violence, an unexpected figure bursts in: a long-lost twin, raised among the lower classes, who manages to infiltrate the palace and its power games.

Roger Corman's 1964 film is famous

Mikey Madison will play both sisters, while Léa Seydoux will portray an ambitious and manipulative lady-in-waiting, determined to climb the ranks by any means. Polinger has described the film as a "maximalist" dark comedy, focused on group dynamics in a confined and suffocating space.

Production is handled by Picturestart, with Julia Hammer and Erik Feig, joined by James Presson and Lucy McKendrick. Filming will begin in February in Hungary.
