Kojima is Sad and Perplexed by the Death of Physical Media
The Japanese game designer is wary of the transition to digital
In recent days, the hottest topic in gamer discussions has been the market's move to abandon physical media, relying exclusively on digital format. The issue was raised after Sony's announcement that it would discontinue game discs starting in 2028. This choice has generated several concerns regarding ownership and access to products.
Hideo Kojima's Opinion
As a guest at Il Cinema in Piazza, an event currently taking place in Rome, Hideo Kojima spoke on the subject. In his speech (which you can see in this video), the Japanese game designer said he was very sad about Sony's decision, having grown up with physical games himself. Kojima confessed that he is currently buying as many Blu-Rays as possible, to still have discs at his disposal.
The Problem of Game Access
Kojima warned about a process that, in his view, will unfold in two phases: the first implies that games are indeed in digital format, but with data downloaded by the user, thus made available to them. In the second phase, however, it will transition to streaming, and the data will remain the exclusive preserve of the providing company: if, for any reason, it were to block the data flow, the user would no longer have any way to access the multimedia content.
