The Last of Us, HBO Prepares for Final Season
The challenge will be to give space to Abby's journey without sacrificing Ellie's ending
HBO is planning the third season of The Last of Us as the series' last. Casey Bloys has indicated this perspective for the future of the adaptation, which will have to complete the events yet to be told from The Last of Us Part II.
The choice leaves the production with a challenging task: to give space to Abby's journey without sacrificing Ellie's ending. The second season primarily followed the latter, while the new cycle is expected to delve deeper into her adversary's perspective.
Race Against Narrative Time
In the video game, Abby's story changes how the audience interprets her actions. After getting revenge, the woman does not find the peace she sought and begins to build a bond with Lev, a young Seraphite on the run. The relationship in some respects recalls that between Joel and Ellie, although it develops under different circumstances.
The season will also have to bring Ellie's story back to Santa Bárbara, where a decisive part of her journey unfolds. Focusing on both narrative arcs in a single season risks compressing important passages; dividing them further, however, might leave too little material for another cycle. The challenge will therefore be to find a rhythm that allows the characters' choices to mature on screen. Kaitlyn Dever and Kyriana Kratter will play Abby and Lev in this phase of the story.
