The Exorcist: The Martyrs, trailer unveils horror beyond death
Flanagan clarified that he does not want to remake William Friedkin's classic, but to tell an original story

A satanic killer dead for thirteen years returns to torment the detective who brought him to justice. This is the starting point of The Exorcist: The Martyrs, the new film directed by Mike Flanagan, which moves away from traditional possession stories to delve into a criminal investigation where murders hide something much darker.
The trailer introduces Julie Miller, played by Scarlett Johansson, a New York detective who became a hero after stopping Father Sunday. When a new killer writes his name in the blood of an altar boy on the walls of a crypt, she is forced to confront a past she believed buried once again.
A chain of killers spanning centuries
Joined by former prison chaplain Father William (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and young detective Gina Restrepo (Sasha Calle), Miller will discover an unsettling link between various serial killers, from H.H. Holmes (Herman Webster Mudgett) to Zodiac. A dark thread that could threaten everything she holds dear, pushing the investigation beyond the boundaries of ordinary crime.
The cast also includes Jacobi Jupe, Diane Lane, and John Leguizamo. The setup inevitably recalls that of The Exorcist III by the great William Peter Blatty (writer of the novel that inspired Friedkin's film), with its investigation into crimes traceable to an already deceased killer. Flanagan clarified that he does not want to remake the 1973 classic, but to tell an original story within the same narrative universe, taking the saga into different territories. The Exorcist: The Martyrs will arrive in theaters on March 12, 2027.
