Shark films continue to be a constant presence in the thriller landscape, but they don't always manage to stand out within an increasingly saturated genre.

The Bay, directed by Phil Volken, tries to do so by focusing not only on the classic open-sea survival story, but also on a production choice that is increasingly rare in contemporary cinema. The trailer, already available online, offers a first look at a project that combines digital effects with an animatronic shark created by the specialized company Bischoff's.

No CGI, but practical effects for the killer creature

The story follows two friends who, after their boat sinks, find themselves in an area populated by sharks, and must find a way to survive as the sea turns into a inescapable trap. The cast includes Francesca Eastwood, Alexander Wraith, Dani Oliveros, and Ta'imua.

Volken also wrote the screenplay and returns to marine settings after Extortion and Dead Sea, focusing not only on the danger posed by predators, but also on the tensions that emerge when survival becomes the sole objective.

The US release of The Bay is scheduled for July 17, 2026, with distribution in both cinemas and on-demand platforms; for now, Italy seems destined to see it via streaming. The trailer hints at a high-tension thriller, without sacrificing a craftsmanship component that is increasingly rare in the genre.
