Xbox and Sega of America dedicated a special of over half an hour to Stranger than Heaven, the new action/adventure developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (known for the Yakuza/Like a Dragon saga). In this long stream, a myriad of information about the game was shared, with new details on its story, the cast bringing the characters to life, the combat system, and more.

The Story of Stranger than Heaven

The events of Stranger than Heaven unfold over a 50-year period. It all begins in 1915, in San Francisco. Here, Makoto Daito, a boy with an American father and Japanese mother, decides to embark for Japan after the death of his parents, seeking better living conditions. The first stop on his journey will be Kokura, Fukuoka, an industrial city home to one of the largest foundries in the world.

In 1929, we find Daito in Kure, Hiroshima, a port city that hosts Japan's largest naval arsenal and is heavily influenced by the Yakuza (with Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio involved, it couldn't be otherwise). In 1943, Daito arrives in Sotenbori, Osaka, a large entertainment district, as tensions for World War II grow. We arrive at 1951, a year spent in Atami, Shizuoka, a lively seaside resort.

The story of Stranger than Heaven concludes in a district that Yakuza/Like a Dragon fans know like the back of their hand: we are talking about Kamurocho, Tokyo, the fictional entertainment district based on Kabukicho, the real red-light district of the Japanese capital. The year is 1965: the game will therefore tell us about Daito's constant struggle for survival, which spans half a century (not by chance, Stranger than Heaven was initially known as Project Century).

An Entertainment Star

The protagonist Daito will accidentally discover that he possesses an innate talent for music, which he will cultivate to become one of Japan's greatest showmen. In Stranger than Heaven, he will need to compose songs, drawing inspiration from the most disparate sources: the rustle of a broom, the sound of trains, animal noises—everything can contribute to writing original pieces, which will be performed in front of an audience.

But Daito will not limit himself to being just a performer; he will also have to search for singers and street artists to perform with and will have to produce the shows, curating the setlist, staging the scenery, and choosing the band members. Throughout the game, we will witness the rise of a man who, starting from nothing, will end up organizing grand shows across Japan.

The Combat of Stranger than Heaven

In Stranger than Heaven, we find the typical street fights of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, but more evolved than those seen in Yakuza. The combat system is freer and will allow players to move in any direction during encounters. A greater number of moves will be available within an intuitive system. Furthermore, a significant detail, Stranger than Heaven proves to be much more brutal and bloody than Yakuza.

The Cast of Stranger than Heaven

The cast of Stranger than Heaven is mainly composed of internationally renowned Japanese actors, but also includes a face known to Western audiences, such as rapper Snoop Dogg. The cast also features the late Bunta Sugawara, who was included with the consent of his family and is voiced by Takashi Utaji.

  • Yu Shirota plays Makoto Daito
