The world of literature loses one of its most beloved voices. Sophie Kinsella, pseudonym of Madeleine Sophie Wickham, died today, December 10, 2025, at the age of 55 after a long battle with glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive brain tumor diagnosed in 2022. The news was announced by her family on social media, in a message full of affection that immediately spread around the world.

"We are devastated to communicate the passing this morning of our beloved Sophie (also known as Maddy, as Mummy). She died peacefully, with her final days filled with the things she truly loved: family, music, warmth, Christmas and joy. We can't imagine what life will be like without her," this was the family's message

Who was Sophie Kinsella: the author who reinvented women's fiction

Born in London in 1969, Kinsella began her career as a financial journalist, only to discover her true calling in novels. At just 24, she published The Tennis Party (Vacanze in villa in Italy), the first in a series of books signed with her birth name, Madeleine Wickham. These were more ensemble and mature works, which garnered critical attention but not yet global explosion.

The breakthrough came in 2000, when she decided to submit a new manuscript under a pseudonym, "Sophie," her middle name, and "Kinsella," her mother's maiden name. That novel was The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic, which became I Love Shopping in Italy.

From there, a global publishing phenomenon was born.

The protagonist Becky Bloomwood, a brilliant and disastrous journalist, compulsively in love with shopping but full of heart, captivated the public like an indispensable friend. The saga grew to ten novels, translated into over 40 languages and selling more than 45 million copies worldwide. In 2009, the first two books were adapted into a film, I Love Shopping, starring Isla Fisher as Becky.

Beyond Becky Bloomwood: Sophie Kinsella, a vast and surprising career

The popularity of the series never overshadowed the author's versatility. Kinsella penned numerous standalone novels, such as Can You Keep a Secret?, The Undomestic Goddess, Finding Audrey, and The Burnout, published in 2023 and warmly received by fans even as the writer faced her illness.
