Ridley Scott Responds to The Dog Stars Controversy
The film has become the subject of discussion due to a choice made by master Ridley Scott

Even before its release in theaters, The Dog Stars - The Stars After the End has become the subject of discussion due to a choice made by master Ridley Scott during the adaptation of Peter Heller's novel. The change concerns Jasper, the dog that accompanies the protagonist Hig: in the book, he is a Blue Heeler, while in the film he will be a Belgian Malinois Shepherd.
For many readers, this is a significant detail, because the animal represents one of the deepest connections to the world lost after the pandemic that destroyed civilization. Interviewed by Empire, Scott showed no regrets, dismissing the protests with a response as blunt as it was explicit.
An Adaptation That Sparked Debate
Set in a post-apocalyptic America, The Dog Stars - The Stars After the End follows the story of pilot Hig, who survives in an old airport with Jasper and former soldier Bangley. The discovery of a mysterious radio signal convinces him to leave his refuge in the hope of finding other survivors.
The project also experienced a change of protagonist during production: Paul Mescal left the film to dedicate himself to the Beatles biopic, ceding the main role to Jacob Elordi. The cast also includes Josh Brolin and Margaret Qualley. Brolin himself recounted that he struggled to adapt to Scott's approach on set, only to appreciate his working method once filming began.
