Neagley, Lee Child: "Maria Sten Has Taken Over the Character"
Reacher's introspection needed to be transformed into something effective for television
"When I think of Neagley, I see Maria Sten." Lee Child couldn't be more direct in describing how much the actress has ended up changing the character born on the pages of his novels. The author of Reacher explained that initially the character also had a very concrete function in the television version: to allow Jack to verbalize thoughts that in the books remain in his head.
The problem was transforming Reacher's introspection into something televisually effective without constantly resorting to a narrator. Neagley thus became the person with whom the protagonist could reason aloud.
Maria Sten Changed the Proportions
According to Child, Maria Sten herself ended up "taking over" the character, making her something much bigger than the function for which she was introduced. From a simple interlocutor for Reacher, Neagley has gained her own dimension, eventually getting the spin-off that bears her name.
Moreover, the journey will continue on paper. Child is preparing with Yasmin Angoe Zero Margin, the first novel dedicated to Frances Neagley, expected in spring 2027. The character's transformation therefore does not stop at television: what was born as an expedient to make Reacher's thoughts visible has now become one of the autonomous focal points of the universe created by Lee Child.
