Maniac Cop Rises: Nicolas Winding Refn Directs Reboot
Initially conceived as a cinematic remake, then transformed into an HBO series
After years of troubled development, the return of Maniac Cop is finally a reality. Nicolas Winding Refn has announced that he will begin filming the new movie in Los Angeles in January 2027, with production and distribution support from MUBI.
The project was initially conceived as a cinematic remake, then transformed into an HBO series that never materialized. Now, however, it returns to its original form: a feature film destined for a theatrical release in numerous territories, including Italy.
Italian Distribution Was Ridiculous in Those Years!
The first Maniac Cop of 1988 did not arrive in Italian cinemas. It was only released in Italy in 1992, a full 4 years after its American release (!). However, the 1990 sequel, Maniac Cop 2, unfortunately was brought to theaters here with the simplified title Maniac Cop or Maniac Cop - Il poliziotto maniaco, creating a lot of confusion. Also because the second film had the ending of the '88 film as a prologue: it seemed like they had put the last reel of the film at the beginning.
When the first chapter finally arrived here, it was renamed Poliziotto sadico, and in some editions it even appeared as Maniac Cop 2: Poliziotto sadico, despite being the original 1988 film (!).
A Killer Cop for Even More Unsettling Times
Refn immediately clarified that it will not be a simple nostalgic reinterpretation of the cult classic directed by William Lustig in 1988. According to the Danish filmmaker, the iconography of the murderous policeman today takes on an even more unhealthy and politically ambiguous weight.
MUBI also defined the project as “a resurrection” rather than a remake, promising a radical and unconventional vision. The original told the hunt for a mysterious uniformed officer who massacres civilians on the streets of New York, dragging a young policeman into a spiral of suspicion and violence.
With Refn's hypnotic and obsessive style, the new Maniac Cop could transform into something very different from a classic slasher: a sick, stylized, and profoundly contemporary urban horror.
