The new version of The Mummy has now made it clear that it is not a spectacular adventure, but a direct immersion into a darker and more sinister horror. The final trailer and newly released promotional materials show a film that decisively moves away from the more popular incarnations of the past.

Those expecting the lighthearted spirit of the saga with Brendan Fraser or a similar approach to the reboot with Tom Cruise will have to change their perspective. Here the tone is completely different: more tense, gritty, and decidedly more unsettling.

She wasn't supposed to come back

The story revolves around Katie, a child who disappeared in the desert years ago and has suddenly reappeared. Her return brings with it something profoundly wrong. The film therefore abandons the classic iconography of tombs and curses to move towards a more intimate horror, mixing possession and family tensions.

Lee Cronin directs, already the author of Evil Dead Rise, and seems to want to push the myth of the mummy into more personal and disturbing territories. An approach consistent with the producers involved, including James Wan and Jason Blum, names now associated with a more psychological and contemporary horror.

The result seems to be a film that uses a genre icon to tell something closer and more uncomfortable, transforming fear into a graphic and unforgettable domestic experience.
