Marine terror strikes again with Killer Whale, a Lionsgate horror film that has just released its first official trailer. Blood, constant tension, and a narrative twist that attempts to breathe new life into the “killer creature” genre.

Captivity Breeds Monsters

Directed and co-written by Jo-Anne Brechin, Killer Whale tells the story of an apparently idyllic vacation that quickly turns into a nightmare. The protagonists are Trish and Maddie, friends marked by recent trauma who decide to seek refuge in a private, remote lagoon to find themselves again. But the sea has other plans. An extremely aggressive orca, just released after years of captivity, begins to hunt them with a ferocity that goes beyond simple predatory instinct.

The trailer suggests an interesting approach: the orca is not just a monster, but also a victim, scarred by abuse and ready for revenge. An idea that adds an unsettling nuance to the story, without sacrificing a fast pace, violent scenes, and survival horror moments, with some transitions into black comedy. The cast is led by Virginia Gardner (Fall) and Mel Jarnson, supported by Mitchell Hope, Mia Grunwald, Aliandra Calabrese, and Isaac Crawley. Lionsgate is banking on aggressive editing and a constantly visible, very physical threat that leaves no room to breathe.

Following recent successes like 47 Meters Down or Under Paris, Killer Whale tries to distinguish itself with its emotional subtext. The theatrical release is set for January 2026, but it's not certain that it will be available on demand immediately in our region.
